Francis Murphy and Arthur Parton There is a photograph at the Adirondack Museum showing these artists sitting on rocks in the Ausable River, although Parton is mis-identified as Winslow Homer in the photograph (see the "Biography" page for a link to the website showing this, plus a sketch of Calvin by Van Elton).

This was painted in 1874 after Calvin's 1873 trip to San Juan Island in Washington Territory to visit his brother-in-law Frederick Epstein, who was stationed on San Juan island (possibly Calvin's sister Jeanie was also there?). He apparently also painted views of Admiralty Inlet and Mount Rainier at about the same time (see list of paintings we would like to find).

Clear the Way!

Oil on Canvas 1883; 36 by 48 inches. Signed lower left "C. Rae Smith".

Exhibited in 1883 at the National Academy of design. It was sold in the 1980s under the title "Coasting" or "Sledding" by Vose Galleries. Also listed in the Brooklyn Art Association entry for Calvin Rae Smith. The painting differs from the sketch of the painting from the exhibition catalog of the National Academy of Design, in that the painting is missing two people (one on each side) who appear in the sketch, and the large tree on right differs between the painting and the sketch. His diary on  October 20, 1883 mentions "Painted out one of the figures in "Clear the Way"".

Louise cared for Calvin the last weeks of his life, and he died at her house (see obituaries page of this website).
